Russia's Radio Jazz: New Program Director Appointed

Michael Ikonnikov, Russian jazz radio veteran, joins Moscow-based Radio Jazz 89.1 FM as Program Director. On air not only in Russian capital but also in Samara, Arkhangelsk, Novgorod, Tomsk, and a few other cities in Russia, the radio station broadcast since 2002, and in 2014, it became part of Multimedia Holding, one of Russia's largest private broadcasting conglomerates. Ikonnikov, now 51, had a popular jazz show on Moscow radio since 1992, when the FM band became available for private broadcasting in post-Soviet Russia (before 1991, it was reserved for police and special forces encoded radio communication.) In 1998, his 'Jazz. A Private Collection' show was awarded the Popov Prize, Russia's first non-government professional award in broadcasting. In the 2000s, he served as music director at Mayak, Russia's second-largest national radio network, and resumed his activities as jazz radio host on a smaller government-owned channel in 2010s.
